Group Design Project – B202
B202 coursework assignment 2
Academic year
2011/12
COURSEWORK DUE DATE
May 20, 2012
Coursework may be submitted up until
midnight of the due date. The timestamp on the coursework submission page is final.
COURSEWORK DESCRIPTION
Each group must write a
design report that contains the following sections:
- Product Description
- A summary of the new product features and target users.
- Design Requirements
- A numbered list of product requirements:
- Most important first, least important last
- Selection of requirements is more important than length or quantity of list
- Must be precise, specific, technical, numerical
- Do not include:
- Explanations of requirements (already included in sections 1 and 2 of the feasibility report)
- Marketing information or sales pitch
- Prototyping Analysis
- Complete description, illustration and analysis of all prototyping activities conducted during the product development process.
- Discuss specific areas where the experience of building prototypes affected the design requirements and specifications.
- Discuss motivations and objectives for key design decisions.
- Design Specifications
- Complete and detailed explanations of methods to build the new product. Include information such as:
- System plans
- System architecture
- Drawings and sketches
- User interfaces
- Parts and supply ordering information
- Do not include:
- Technical information that is not relevant to the product design
- Design specification of other products
- Marketing information or sales pitch
Each group will be required to
demonstrate their prototype during a lecture session.
This will take place during the May 11, 2012 lecture session and each group will have
up to 10 minutes to demonstrate their prototype to the entire class.
The report must have a length of
2,000 to
5,000 words (excluding references). You may use supporting images, charts, diagrams and other visual elements from outside sources. All external reference sources must be properly cited using the
Harvard APA referencing and citation format.
This coursework contributes
30% to the B202 unit mark.
COURSEWORK SUBMISSION
Coursework must be submitted online using the Mosaic website. Students are
not permitted to write their coursework using Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat or similar programs. The coursework content (text and images)
must be written directly within the Mosaic coursework submission page for each group.
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
Each group will receive a total number of marks based on the assessment criteria below multiplied by the number of students in the group. Each group is responsible for the allocation of individual marks to each student as a share of the total marks received by the group.
| Marks | Criteria |
70–100 [A] |
The coursework demonstrates:
- an ability to achieve specific design objectives through the selection and application of design principles and techniques during the new product development process
- successful development of a rigorous set of requirements and accurate specifications for a creative new product that involve the use of the Arduino hardware as a USB input device that controls music or movie software on a computer
- coordinated and comprehensive efforts to build, illustrate, test and demonstrate product prototypes
- an ability to articulate design concepts for clarity and effect, as well as following conventional writing requirements
|
60–69 [B] |
The coursework demonstrates:
- a capacity to apply design techniques during the new product development process
- successful development of a complete set of requirements and accurate specifications for a new product that involve the use of the Arduino hardware as a USB input device that controls music or movie software on a computer
- comprehensive efforts to build, illustrate, test and demonstrate product prototypes
- an ability to articulate design concepts, as well as following conventional writing requirements
|
50–59 [C] |
The coursework demonstrates:
- competent development of requirements and specifications for a new product that involve the use of the Arduino hardware as a USB input device that controls music or movie software on a computer
- a competent effort to build, illustrate and demonstrate product prototypes
- an ability to follow conventional writing requirements, but with minimal awareness of choices that affect clarity and style
|
40–49 [D] |
The coursework demonstrates:
- earnest attempts to develop requirements and specifications for a new product that involve the use of the Arduino hardware as a USB input device that controls music or movie software on a computer
- earnest efforts to build and demonstrate product prototypes
- an attempt to follow conventional writing requirements, but with a number of avoidable mistakes
|
0–39 [FAIL] |
The coursework demonstrates:
- insufficient development of requirements and specifications for a new product that involve the use of the Arduino hardware as a USB input device that controls music or movie software on a computer
- minimal effort to build and demonstrate product prototypes
- minimal effort to follow conventional writing requirements
